Seawolves sweep past Falcons, 93-82

ANCHORAGE – Sasha King had 25 points and nine assists and the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team got a huge lift from junior Kylie Burns to rally Thursday for a 93-82 win over Seattle Pacific at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (11-9, 5-7 GNAC) got a career-high 22 points from Burns as they swept the regular-season series from SPU for the first time since 1999-00, when both teams played in the Pacific West Conference.

The Falcons (12-8, 6-6) were led by 21 points and eight rebounds from junior center, while senior guard Rachel Murray finished with eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

UAA never trailed in the first half and led 44-38 at the break, thanks to King's 19-point effort in the opening 20 minutes. The senior point guard picked up two fouls in the first two minutes but stayed out of further trouble as she logged 37 minutes.

Seattle Pacific rallied to take its first lead of the night at 51-50 on Brianne Lasconia's layup with 15:26 remaining – the first of six lead changes in the second half. Tied at 57, the Falcons appeared to take control with back-to-back threes from Suzanna Ohlsen and Benson, but the Seawolves answered quickly with Jenna Buchanan and Burns nailing treys just 25 seconds apart.

After SPU's Maddy Pflaumer put the visitors up 69-68 with 6 minutes to play, Burns grabbed an offensive rebound and drew a foul from Pflaumer. Burns sank both free throws to start a string of six straight charities for UAA, and the hosts would not trail again.

UAA led just 76-75 with 3:19 left when Burns took a feed from King and buried another three, starting an 8-0 surge that clinched the victory.

After shooting 7 of 12 in the opening stanza, King turned to distributor mode in the second, dishing seven of her nine assists. Burns, who had just two points and two rebounds at halftime, was the recipient of several of those passes. The 5-9 wing from Kansas City shot 5 of 6 in the second half, including 2 of 3 from three-point land, to blow past her previous career-high of 16 points. Her eight rebounds were also twice as many as any other Seawolf.

Senior Alysa Horn was consistent throughout, finishing with 16 points, four rebounds and three steals. The forward from Kodiak sank a long jumper early in the second half to earn her 1,000th career point, becoming the 12th Seawolf woman to reach that mark, now at 1,006.

Meanwhile, Buchanan continued her hot shooting as the freshman from Galena scored 14 points on 5-of-7 marksmanship, including 4 of 5 treys.

UAA shot 11 of 26 from long range and committed only 10 turnovers to SPU's 23.

Combined with their 77-72 win over SPU last month in Seattle, the Seawolves are now just one game back of the fifth-place Falcons in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings. The top six teams make the GNAC Tournament in March.

The Seawolves return to the WFSC on Saturday night to face third-place Montana State Billings (15-5, 9-3) at 7 p.m.

NOTES: UAA got seven points and four rebounds from senior Jordan Martin, who returned from a six-game absence due to an academic issue … UAA's 93 points marked the most in 53 all-time games against the Falcons; the previous most came in a 91-88 overtime home loss in 1995 … the Seawolves improved to 5-1 in the last six meetings against SPU … Burns' previous career-high was 16 points in a road win over Chaminade in December 2011 … Buchanan had her best scoring game in GNAC play, topping an 11-point performance in a Jan. 24 win at Western Oregon.
