Men fall to Saints in Lacey, 60-52

LACEY, Wash. – Sophomore Teancum Stafford had 20 points and 10 rebounds, but host Saint Martin's used a late rally to knock off the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team, 60-52 at Marcus Pavilion on Thursday night.

The Seawolves (14-6, 7-5 GNAC) also got 13 points from junior guard Kyle Fossman, but they shot just 31 percent as their three-game winning streak came to an end in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.

The Saints (7-12, 3-8) got 18 points and seven rebounds from guard Evan Coulter, while forward Roger O'Neill had 14 points and six assists while playing 40 minutes.

UAA forged a 25-21 lead at halftime as Stafford took less than 20 minutes to earn his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. From nearby Auburn, Wash., Stafford added nine points in the second half and finished 5 of 6 from three-point range, along with three blocks.

The second half was a battle of momentum as the Saints forged a 48-40 lead at the 7-minute mark. Stafford hit a trey to stem the tide, however, and Fossman tallied seven straight points, including a go-ahead three-pointer with 3:38 left, to put the Seawolves up 50-48.

But Coulter answered with a pair of free throws at the 2:47 mark to start a game-winning 11-point surge for the Saints, who earned a season split with UAA.

Senior center Liam Gibcus added six points and 11 rebounds for the Seawolves, who fall into a third-place tie in the GNAC standings with Central Washington and Alaska Fairbanks.

UAA remains on the road to face Western Oregon (9-10, 4-7) in a 3:15 p.m. AST tip-off on Saturday in Monmouth, Ore.
