Pioneers claim 6-1 win at Magness

DENVER – The Alaska Anchorage hockey team wrapped up its regular season Sunday with a 6-1 loss to 11th-ranked Denver at Magness Arena.

The Seawolves (4-23-7, 2-22-6 WCHA) got their lone score from senior forward Tyler Currier, who found the net at 16:42 of the third period for his fourth goal of the year. Freshman defenseman Blake Leask and senior forward Daniel Naslund earned the assists, their ninth and sixth on the season, respectively.

The Pioneers (19-11-5, 14-9-5) took a 3-0 lead after the first period and got two more strikes from Shawn Ostrow in the second to pull away.

Despite the final, UAA was outshot just 34-28, with junior goalie Chris Kamal making 28 saves. DU's Sam Brittain picked up the victory with 27 saves.

DU went 1 for 4 on the power play, while UAA could not convert on two chances.

Next up for both teams is the Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs, with UAA's first-round series now set at top-seeded St. Cloud State. The Seawolves and Huskies will face off on Friday, Mar. 15 and Saturday, Mar. 16, followed by a Sunday 'if-necessary' meeting to decide the best-of-3 series.
