ANCHORAGE – Saint Martin's Angela Gelhar poured in a game-high 36 points to lead the hot-shooting Saints to an 85-78 win over Alaska Anchorage in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
With the win, SMU (10-4, 4-1 GNAC) leap-frogged UAA (11-3, 4-2) by a half-game into first place in the GNAC. The loss snapped a 10-game WFSC home winning streak for the Seawolves.
Kylie Burns led the Seawolves with 17 points while Kiki Robertson added 14 and Jessica Madison 10.
In a game that saw 53 fouls called and 74 free throws shot, SMU led virtually the entire game. After trailing by as many as 13 (22-9) in the first half, the Seawolves clawed back to take the lead briefly late in the first half, going up 40-37 at the 1:42 mark.
But the Saints regained the halftime lead, 43-41, and the Seawolves were never quite able to get over the hump despite pulling to within three a couple of times in the second half – the final time at 77-74 at the 3:12 mark.
Gelhar was on fire, going 9-for-15 from the field, including 6-for-9 threes, and 12-for-14 from the free throw line. She was supported by the scoring of Ciara Pedroni (12), Jordyn Richardson (11) and Chelsea Haskey (10).
Saint Martin's shot 47 perent from the field, including 56 percent from three-point land, and a sizzling 85 percent from the charity stripe. SMU outrebounded the Seawolves, 36-32, and registered seven blocks on the night.
