Comeback effort falls short at SFU, 78-74

BURNABY, British Columbia – Sophomore guard Jessica Madison sparked a big Alaska Anchorage comeback effort Saturday but the Seawolves fell just short, losing 78-74 to fellow Great Northwest Athletic Conference contender Simon Fraser in women's basketball action at the SFU West Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (12-5, 5-4 GNAC) were led by 16 points, five rebounds and three steals from point guard Kiki Robertson, but the freshman was one of three UAA players to foul out. After falling 76-70 at defending West Region champion Western Washington on Thursday, UAA has now lost back-to-back games for the first time this season.

Simon Fraser (12-5, 6-3) – the regional runner-up to WWU last season – was powered by 34 points on 12-of-20 shooting from junior forward Erin Chambers. The Clan star also shot 7 of 7 from the free-throw line and added five rebounds and three assists.

The Seawolves fell behind 13-2 in the opening minutes and spent virtually the entire game in come-from-behind mode.

UAA faced a 50-40 deficit with 14 minutes left when Madison (12 points) got free for the first of her three three-pointers, sparking an 11-2 run. SMU's lead grew no higher than five points for the next 10 minutes, and the Seawolves finally tied it for the first time, 67-67, on a layup from Alysha Devine at the 3:21 mark.

A Chambers layup was answered by two Jessica Madison free throws, and UAA's Alli Madison gave the visitors their first lead, 71-69, with two free throws at the 1:36 mark. Chambers would come up with the play of the game, however, hitting a spinning layup and drawing a foul on the ensuing possession, followed by a successful free throw.

The Seawolves had two chances to take the lead but Jessica Madison missed a midrange jumper and Devine committed a turnover, leading to a layup by SFU's Meg Wilson that made it 74-71 with 41 seconds left.

On UAA's last gasp, reserve point guard Christina Davis came up short on a three-point try, and Chambers clinched the game by going 4 of 4 from the charity stripe in the final 13 seconds.

Davis finished with a career-high 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting, along with four assists. Alli Madison scored 14 points (7-8 FTs), and senior forward Kylie Burns had nine points and five rebounds.

The Seawolves reach the midpoint of the GNAC campaign tied for fifth place but just two games behind co-leaders Montana State Billings and Western Washington, and one game back of third-place SFU and Seattle Pacific. UAA returns to the Wells Fargo Sports Complex next week for home games against Central Washington on Jan. 30 and Northwest Nazarene on Feb. 1. Both games tip at 7 p.m. AST.
