Seawolves tame Black Bears, 3-1, in Kendall

ANCHORAGE - Host Alaska Anchorage got two goals to snap a second-period tie and held on Friday for a 3-1 victory over Maine in the Kendall Hockey Classic at Sullivan Arena.

The Seawolves outshot the Black Bears 29-19 and used a solid performance from sophomore goaltender Michael Matyas, who made 18 stops to earn the victory.

The teams got the scoring under way early, with UAA senior Scott Allen converting a feed from Austin Coldwell and Blake Tatchell on the power play after just 2 minutes, 17 seconds. Maine's Jack Musil answered with 4:39 elapsed when he scored a virtual power-play goal, beating a screened Matyas from the center point just one second after Austin Sevalrud's hooking penalty had expired.

But the Black Bears would not get many more solid scoring chances and UAA took control with two even-strength strikes in the second period. With 4:37 gone, freshman Austin Azurdia took a feed from Chase Van Allen and found himself with a 2-on-1 advantage, alongside linemate Hayden Trupp. Azurdia threatened the pass to Trupp but held possession and flipped a shot past the left shoulder of Maine goalie Matt Morris.

At the 16:13 mark, the Seawolves made it 3-1 when Hudson Friesen nicely controlled freshman Matt Anholt's behind-the-net pass and beat Morris again. It was the fourth career goal for the sophomore from East St. Paul, Minn.

With the two-goal victory, UAA takes the early advantage in its quest for an unprecedented fourth straight Kendall title. Rival Alaska Fairbanks also won earlier Friday – but with a plus-1 differential (1-0) – over 10th-ranked Wisconsin.

It also continued a pair of impressive streaks for the Seawolves, who are now 10-0-3 in their last 13 season openers and 6-0-3 in their last five Kendall Classics.

The Seawolves return to the ice Saturday for the Kendall finale against at 7:07 p.m., while Maine will face Alaska Fairbanks at 4:07 p.m.
