Zanders powers 'Wolves to sweep of Nanooks

ANCHORAGE – Katelynn Zanders had 13 kills and nine digs to help the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team overcome a slow start Saturday in a 25-22, 25-14, 25-12 sweep of rival Alaska Fairbanks at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (14-3, 8-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got seven kills apiece from senior Brooke Pottle and sophomore Kayla McGlathery as they retained at least partial possession of first place in the GNAC with Northwest Nazarene (14-2, 7-1), which hosts Montana State Billings later Saturday.

The Nanooks (2-15, 2-7) got 13 kills and nine digs from sophomore outside hitter Sam Harthun as they lost their first-ever visit to UAA's new arena. UAA out-hit its guests .247 to .087 and posted advantages of 8-2 in aces and 6-2 in blocks.

Playing without all-conference right-side hitter Julia Mackey – who was held out for precautionary reasons – the Seawolves rode Zanders' .323 attack percentage to their fourth straight victory and third straight sweep.

Junior right-side hitter Caitlin McInerney also had a nice effort with four kills on just seven attacks and no errors, taking advantage of setter Morgan Hooe's pinpoint sets.

Hooe, a sophomore from South Anchorage High School, finished with 25 assists, 11 digs, three kills and career-high four aces, including the last two points of the match.

McGlathery and sophomore Erin Braun led UAA with three block assists apiece, while Braun added two aces for the first time in her career.

The Seawolves return to the road next week when they begin the second half of the GNAC campaign with clashes at Seattle Pacific (Sept. 16, 6 p.m. ADT) and Montana State Billings (Sept. 18, 5 p.m. ADT).
