Barker helps Seawolves fend off Saints, 3-0

ANCHORAGE - Right-side hitter Julia Mackey recorded a double-double and libero Quinn Barker had 23 digs Thursday to help the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team fend off a challenge from visiting Saint Martin's, 25-13, 27-25, 25-21 at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (12-3, 6-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got a match-high13 kills from junior outside hitter Katelynn Zanders as they defeated the Saints for the 13th straight time.

The Saints (4-13, 1-5) were led by eight kills and nine digs from senior outside hitter Kristyn Ross, but no other SMU player managed more than four kills against UAA's stingy back-row defense.

Led by Barker – a senior from Mission Viejo, Calif. – UAA dominated the digs battle by a 63-42 count, including nine from Zanders.

Meanwhile, Mackey recorded her third straight double-double and fourth this season, finishing with 10 kills and 14 digs. Prior to this season, the Fairbanks (West Valley HS) product had only one double-double in two years.

Sophomore setter Morgan Hooe orchestrated a balanced Seawolf attack with 33 assists as UAA out-hit the visitors from Lacey, Wash., .254 to .079.

After dominating the first set, UAA wasted an early lead in the second and trailed 21-20 before Zanders evened things with a kill. The Seawolves went ahead 24-22 but could not convert on three set points over the next few minutes. UAA finally snapped a 25-25 deadlock and took a 2-0 lead when Brooke Pottle and Mackey slammed back-to-back kills.

The Saints stayed close for most of the third set, however the Seawolves kept them at arm's length and got match point on an SMU service error.

The final frame was highlighted by the return of junior Caitlin McInerney, who had not played since injuring an ankle Sept. 16 at Western Washington. The middle blocker from Laramie,Wyo., had five kills and no attack errors on eight swings (.625) in the third.

UAA returns to the Alaska Airlines Center Saturday for the second of a three-match homestand when they take on Western Oregon at 7 p.m.
