MONMOUTH, Ore. – Sophomore setter Morgan Hooe dished 35 assists to pilot 25th-ranked Alaska Anchorage to a 25-22, 25-16, 25-13 volleyball victory of Western Oregon at the New P.E. Building on Thursday night.
The Seawolves (18-4, 12-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) – No. 2 in the NCAA Div. II West Region rankings – were led by a match-high 12 kills from junior outside hitter Katelynn Zanders as they swept the season series from WOU for the second straight year.
The Wolves (3-18, 1-12) got no more than five kills from any player as they were out-hit .279 to .056 and outblocked 8-3.
The hosts were coming off their first GNAC victory last Saturday against Saint Martin's, and they appeared to carry that momentum into the Thursday's opening set, taking a 18-15 lead against the Seawolves. But two fast kills from UAA junior right-side hitter Julia Mackey (8 kills, 3 assists) jumpstarted a 10-4 surge, capped by a decisive spike from Caitlin McInerney on set point.
UAA rolled from there, spreading the offensive wealth and hitting .400 in the third set to close the match.
Kayla McGlathery hit a match-high .412 with nine kills and five total blocks, while fellow sophomore middle blocker Erin Braun added five kills and three block assists. Senior right-side hitter Maureen Sabado spelled Mackey in the final set and ripped three kills on four attacks, along with a pair of block assists.
Senior libero Quinn Barker had 11 digs to keep her streak of 22 straight double-digit performances alive, and Zanders added eight digs.
With the win, UAA stayed within one match of GNAC leader and 15th-ranked Northwest Nazarene (20-2, 13-1), which avenged its lone league loss with a 3-0 home win over 9th-ranked Western Washington earlier Thursday in Idaho.
The Seawolves travel north for their next match Saturday at Saint Martin's at 6 p.m. ADT.
