Volleyball posts road sweep of Saints

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Sophomore middle blocker Kayla McGlathery had 10 kills to lead an impressive offensive performance Saturday as 25th-ranked Alaska Anchorage earned a 25-22, 25-9, 25-19 volleyball sweep of Saint Martin's at Capital High School.

The Seawolves (19-4, 13-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got eight kills and nine digs from junior outside hitter Katelynn Zanders to beat the Saints for the 14th consecutive time.

Saint Martin's (4-22, 1-13) was led by nine kills from Kyra Davidson, but the hosts were out-hit .310 to .104. UAA's team hitting percentage was its best this season in a road match, lifted by McGlathery's .526 effort (10 kills-0 errors-19 attacks).

The Seawolves – ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Div. II West Region – trailed by as many as five points in the first set before finally taking a 19-18 lead on an SMU attack error. An ace by senior libero Quinn Barker and two more from sophomore setter Morgan Hooe made it a 23-19 lead, and Julia Mackey smashed one of her five kills on set point.

The second frame was not as competitive, with UAA jumping to an 11-2 lead and hitting .444 to run away with the set. The Seawolves raced to a 13-7 advantage in the third set and pulled away late after the Saints had cut it to 14-12. McGlathery and junior Caitlin McInerney each had a pair of kills in the clinching run. McInerney finished with five kills on just 10 attacks for a career-best .500 attack percentage.

Hooe was solid again in running the Seawolf offense, tallying 33 assists and three aces. Barker, meanwhile, had a pair of aces and a match-best 19 digs, including 11 in the third set. Sophomore middle blocker Erin Braun did most of her damage in the second set and wound up with six kills.

UAA heads north for its final regular-season road match, Saturday, Nov. 8 at in-state rival Alaska Fairbanks. The Seawolves trail regionally top-ranked Northwest Nazarene by one match for the GNAC lead entering the final two weeks of the season. NNU earned a 5-set home win over Simon Fraser earlier Saturday in Idaho.
