UAA blasts Hawks 92-35 in season opener

ANCHORAGE – Junior guard Jessica Madison scored a career-high 21 points and a pair of freshmen delivered double-doubles Friday as the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team began its season with a 92-35 blowout of Holy Names at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves also got 19 points from senior wing Alli Madison, leading from start to finish in the first-ever game between the two programs.

The Hawks, from the Pacific West Conference, were led by seven points from guard Hannah Santos and six rebounds from center Tatiana Howard.

UAA scored the first seven points and led 16-7 at the 11-minute mark before breaking it wide open. Jessica Madison got things rolling with the first of her three three-pointers as the Seawolves recorded a 21-0 run over the next seven minutes. UAA's 49-12 halftime lead marked its fourth-largest ever against a fellow NCAA Div. II opponent, while the 37-point margin was fifth-best against a D-II foe.

True freshman forward Leah Bonner drew the starting assignment and delivered 12 points, 13 rebounds and four assists, while redshirt freshman Sierra Afoa came off the bench to tally 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting and 12 rebounds (9 offensive).

Jessica Madison connected on 9-of-15 from the floor, while Alli Madison shot 6-of-11 from the floor and 7-of-7 at the free-throw line. Junior guard Jenna Buchanan was the fifth Seawolf in double figures with 11 points.

Sophomore point guard Kiki Robertson dished six assists and had four steals, and senior center KeKe Wright collected five steals and three blocks.

UAA held the visitors from Oakland, Calif., to 27.5 percent shooting (11 of 40) and forced 35 turnovers – 23 on steals. All 10 Seawolves scored at least three points and collected at least one steal.

The 57-point margin of victory marked the sixth-largest against a D-II opponent and the biggest against any foe under 3rd-year head coach Ryan McCarthy.

UAA is back at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex on Saturday for another Pac West opponent when Chaminade comes to town. Tip-off is 5 p.m.
