#3 Seawolves blast Javelinas, 90-49

ANCHORAGE – Megan Mullings scored a career-high 20 points and Kiki Robertson dished 14 assists Friday to lead No. 3 Alaska Anchorage to a 90-49 rout of Texas A&M Kingsville in women's basketball action at the Seawolf Hoops Classic at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (10-0) matched the second-best start in program history as they forced 34 turnovers and took nearly twice as many shots – 74 to 39 – against the visitors from the Lone Star Conference.

The Javelinas (0-8) were led by 11 points and six rebounds from reserve guard Micah Weaver.

UAA raced to a 10-2 lead behind the hot shooting of junior guard Jenna Buchanan – who finished with 17 points on 5-of-6 three-point accuracy – but Kingsville responded with solid play and trailed just 21-15 at the 12:27 mark of the first half.

Seawolf head coach Ryan McCarthy whistled a 30-second timeout to stop the visitors' momentum, however, and his team answered with the next 13 points to pull away. UAA led 58-26 at halftime and started the second half with a 10-0 run, stretching to its largest lead of the night.

Junior Jessica Madison scored 15 points and freshman Leah Bonner added 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting and eight steals – the most for a Seawolf in five seasons.

Robertson, a sophomore point guard from Honolulu, came one assist shy of the school record she tied earlier this season, while adding four steals in just 18 minutes. Mullings, a junior post, did all of her damage in a short time as well, shooting 9 of 13 from the floor and adding eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks in 17 minutes.

Freshman point guard Jerica Nelson saw her most extensive playing time thus far, tying her personal bests with five points and four assists, along with three steals.

On Saturday the Javelinas will play Alaska Fairbanks in Game 3 of the Hoops Classic at 5 p.m., followed by the finale with UAA hosting Pacific (Ore.) at 7 p.m.

NOTES: UAA's 10-0 start matches the 2007-08 club for the second-best in program history; the 2006-07 team holds the record at 12-0 … UAA's 58 points in the first half tied for 9th-most in program history and the 4th-highest total against a fellow NCAA Div. II opponent … the 32-point halftime lead tied for the 9th-largest against a Div. II foe … Bonner's eight steals tied were just two shy of the UAA single-game record and were the most for a Seawolf since Kiki Taylor had eight against Montana State Billings, Jan. 14, 2010 … Robertson's 14 assists stand alone at the 3rd-most in a game by a Seawolf, trailing only her 15 against Christian Brothers on Nov. 20 and Diane Dobrich's 15 against Denver on Jan. 5, 1990 … Robertson joined Dobrich (1986-90), Allegra Stoetzel (1992-96) and Sasha King (2010-13) as the only Seawolves with four career double-digit assist outings.
