#3 UAA blasts HPU in key region tilt, 109-83

ANCHORAGE – Junior guard Jenna Buchanan scored a career-high 21 points to lead seven players in double figures as 3rd-ranked Alaska Anchorage made a statement with a 109-83 rout of Hawaii Pacific in a key NCAA Div. II West Region women's basketball game at the Alaska Airlines Center on Sunday night.

The Seawolves (12-0) matched the best start in program history and the third-longest winning streak for a UAA club by shooting 51 percent (38 of 74) from the field, including 8 of 16 from three-point range. Senior forward KeKe Wright matched her career-high with 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting and junior point guard Adriana Dent had her first double-digit effort with 13 points.

The Sharks (8-2) got game-highs of 28 points and 14 rebounds from center Morganne Comstock but the Honolulu club could not deal with the Seawolves' depth, getting outscored 49-2 in bench points. HPU had its seven-game winning streak come to an end, suffering its first loss since Nov. 15.

The game was tight early, featuring five ties in the first seven-plus minutes before the Seawolves took control. Knotted 15-15, Buchanan earned a pair of free throws at the 13:35 mark to start a 12-0 run, and UAA never let the lead fall below double digits again. Dent gave the Seawolves a 53-33 advantage with a jumper right before the break, and the lead ballooned to 68-42 before four minutes elapsed in the second half.

UAA took its largest lead when Jessica Madison (16 points) made it 101-65 with two free throws at the 5-minute mark. The Seawolves' 109 points were the eighth-most in program history and second-highest total against a fellow NCAA Div. II opponent.

Senior guard Alli Madison had 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting and eight rebounds, freshman forward Leah Bonner had 10 points and eight boards, and sophomore point guard Kiki Robertson scored 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting in just eight minutes before leaving with concussion-like symptoms.

The Seawolves committed a season-low 12 turnovers with Dent running the controls most of the night, as the former JC All-American (Coll. of Southern Idaho) shot 2 of 2 from long range and 5 of 6 at the free throw line, along with two assists, two steals and no turnovers in 23 minutes.

UAA also matched its best three-point performance this year with 8-of-16 accuracy.

The Seawolves resume league play on New Year's Day when they host the first-ever Great Northwest Athletic Conference game at the Alaska Airlines Center with a 5:15 p.m. tip-off against Northwest Nazarene (3-8, 1-1 GNAC).

NOTES: UAA matched the 2006-07 team for the best start in program history at 12-0 ... against D-II programs, the 109 points trailed only the 120 scored against then-Div. II Air Force on Feb. 18, 1989 … UAA's 109 points also marked the most in any game since the 1995-96 season … Sunday's game was the first matchup between UAA and HPU in women's basketball since the Sharks re-added the sport prior to the 2007-08 season … Buchanan shot 3 of 5 from long range and is now 10 of 14 on treys over the last three games.
