#18 UAA crushes #23 SPU in battle of unbeatens

SEATTLE – Washington native Jessica Madison scored a career-high 22 points and 18th-ranked Alaska Anchorage used its stifling full-court defense to earn a record-setting 85-58 over 23rd-ranked Seattle Pacific at Royal Brougham Pavilion on Saturday.

The Seawolves (7-0, 2-0 GNAC) also got 14 points apiece from Megan Mullings and Seattle native Alli Madison, leaving UAA as the only unbeaten team in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and one of only two in the NCAA Div. II West Region.

The Falcons (6-1, 1-1) were led by nine points apiece from guards Betsy Kingma, Aubree Callen and Stacey Lukasiewicz as they managed to shoot only 30.2 percent and were forced into 25 turnovers.

UAA took control early, scoring the first seven points, including five by Mullings. Leading 19-10, junior guard Jenna Buchanan drained a three-pointer to put the Seawolves up by double digits for good at the 12:28 mark, and UAA went in with a 47-33 halftime lead despite major foul trouble.

SPU hung within 53-39 early in the second half before the Madisons fed each other for consecutive three-pointers, and Buchanan made it a 69-43 game with a floater in the lane at the 11:14 mark. The Seawolves outscored the Falcons 44-12 in points in the paint and 23-10 in points off turnovers.

The victory marked UAA's largest in 56 all-time meetings against its second-most common rival, topping an 82-59 home win on Jan. 7, 2012. The Seawolves' previous largest margin at Brougham was 13 (85-72, Feb. 2, 2000).

While Jessica Madison – from Port Angeles, Wash. – did her damage from outside (4-10 3FGs), Mullings shot an efficient 6-for-10 and added a game-high three steals. Alli Madison shot 5 of 9 (2 of 2 3FGs), and Buchanan finished with 10 points (4-7 FG, 2-4 3FG) and six rebounds.

Freshman forward Leah Bonner narrowly missed her fourth double-double with eight points and 12 rebounds, and senior forward KeKe Wright came off the bench with seven points and 10 rebounds, helping UAA win the battle of the boards, 43-35.

The Seawolves return to non-conference action for their next five games, beginning with a two-game set against McKendree (Ill.), Dec. 13-14. Saturday's game will tip at 2 p.m. at the Alaska Airlines Center, while Sunday's contest will begin at 5 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

NOTES: UAA's previous largest win over a ranked opponent was a 77-58 victory over No. 13 Grand Canyon in the second round of the 2012 NCAA Div. II West Regional Championships … Jessica Madison broke her career-high for the second time this season, topping the 21 points she tallied in the opener against Holy Names … with her four three-pointers, Madison is now just one shy of becoming the 12th Seawolf with 100 treys … UAA is off to a 7-0 start for the fourth time on program history (2006-07, 2007-08, 2009-10) and the first time under 3rd-year head coach Ryan McCarthy … Cal State San Bernardino (6-0) earned a road win at San Francisco State earlier Saturday to remain the only other unbeaten West Region team.
