Seawolves extend streak to 14 against Nanooks

ANCHORAGE – Sophomore guard Jenna Buchanan powered a balanced offensive attack with 19 points and five assists Saturday to lead Alaska Anchorage to an 88-68 women's basketball victory over Alaska Fairbanks at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (16-6, 9-5 GNAC) also got 12 points and six assists from junior wing Alli Madison as they beat their in-state rivals for the 14th straight time.

The Nanooks (9-13, 3-11) were led by 15 points, five rebounds and four assists from guard Victoria Milton, but the visitors were outshot 49 percent to 36 percent and outrebounded 43-34.

Trailing 18-13 in the early going, UAA scored 11 of the next 13 points to take the lead for good. Jessica Madison connected on four straight free throws and swished a three-pointer to make it 35-28, and the Seawolves took a 41-31 lead into halftime.

The Nanooks sliced their deficit to just 43-40 with 17:18 remaining, but Seawolf point guard Kiki Robertson scored five points on the next two possessions, including a three-point play on a mid-range jumper.

Buchanan converted a layup to make it 58-47 with 11:10 on the clock, and the lead quickly ballooned to 67-47 on her final three-pointer of the day. The Galena product shot 7 of 11 from the floor, including 3 of 3 from long range, to come one shy of her career-high of 20 points, set in UAA's Feb. 1 last home win over Northwest Nazarene.

Jessica Madison finished with 11 points, boosted by 6-of-6 free throws, and junior forward KeKe Wright joined her in double figures with 10 points (3-4 FG, 4-4 FT). Seven different Seawolves scored at least eight points, including a 9-point, 8-rebound effort from senior forward Kylie Burns.

UAA also survived foul trouble on starting point guard Kiki Robertson (8 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds), thanks to a steady performance from reserve Christina Davis, who picked up four points, four assists and two steals in 25 minutes.

Prior to Saturday's evening games, the Seawolves now stand alone in fourth place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings, just a half-game ahead of Saint Martin's and Seattle Pacific.

UAA stays at home next week for its final home games ever at the WFSC, hosting Simon Fraser on Thursday and Western Washington on Saturday. Both games tip at 5:15 p.m.

NOTES: UAF's last win in the series was an 85-83 overtime decision in Fairbanks, Jan. 7, 2006 … UAA extended its home streak to nine against the Nanooks … with her 86th win in a Seawolf uniform, Burns pulled within one of former teammate Alysa Horn (87, 2009-13) for No. 4 on the career list … now with 112 assists on the year, Robertson moved within seven of the UAA freshman record, set by Allegra Stoetzel with 119 in 1992-93.
