Bulldogs hand Seawolves 4-2 defeat

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves fell to the No. 5/6-ranked Ferris State Bulldogs, 4-2 in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game on Friday evening in front of a sold-out crowd at the Ewigleben Ice Arena.

The Seawolves (15-12-4, 11-10-4 WCHA) trailed 2-0 after the first 20 minutes, before cutting the lead in half with senior Jordan Kwas' power-play tally at 2:56 of the second. Unfortunately, the momentum didn't swing in UAA's favor, and the Bulldogs (22-7-3, 17-4-2 WCHA) responded 1:51 later to regain the two-goal lead that would hold through the final buzzer.

Kwas, from Cochrane, Alberta, extended his current point streak to six games when senior defender Quinn Sproule fed him a cross ice pass while the Seawolves were enjoying a 5-on-3 power play. Picking up the second helper on the play was sophomore Blake Tatchell.

In the final period, the Bulldogs took a 4-1 lead with a goal by Gerald Mayhew at 18:23, but UAA responded just 16 seconds later with junior Andrew Pettitt's fourth of the season, unassisted. Pettitt has picked up points in six of the last seven games.

Bench boss Matt Thomas pulled neminder Chris Kamal in the final minute, but was unable to crack the Bulldog defense.

The Bulldogs picked up their 1-0 lead at 11:37 of the first on the man advantage when junior Brett Cameron was whistled for charging and received a five-minute major. Ferris State – who owns one of the nation's top three overall home records this season – capitalized again at 17:55 with a tally by Kenny Babinski.

Kamal made 33 saves in net, while CJ Motte turned aside 29 shots for FSU. The Bulldogs outshot the Seawolves, 37-31, including a 12-7 advantage in the opening stanza.

UAA went 1-for-5 on the power play, while FSU was 1-for-6.

Following the outcomes of games around the league, UAA is now tied for No. 3 in the standings with Michigan Tech, who defeated Northern Michigan, 7-4.

The teams will rematch tomorrow afternoon at 3:07 p.m. AST.
