'Jackets halt 5-game win streak, 75-72

BILLINGS, Mont. – Sophomore guard Jessica Madison scored a career-high 19 points and senior Kylie Burns sparked a big comeback for visiting Alaska Anchorage, but Montana State Billings hung on for a 75-72 victory Saturday in an important Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball game at Alterowitz Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (19-7, 12-6 GNAC) – ranked No. 8 in the latest NCAA Div. II West Region poll – got 14 points from Burns and a career-high eight rebounds from point guard Christina Davis as they finished in a tie for third place in the final GNAC standings. UAA will be the No. 3 seed and play either Saint Martin's or Seattle Pacific in the GNAC Tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday, Mar. 5 at 4:15 pm AST.

The Yellowjackets (23-6, 15-3) – who entered with a No. 2 regional ranking and the GNAC title in hand – got a game-high 20 points and six rebounds from forward Kayleen Goggins, plus 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting from Chelsea Banis.

UAA erased a 44-31 halftime deficit to take the lead three times in the late going, with Burns scoring nine points after the break, but Montana State Billings answered every time and took a 71-67 advantage on a transition three-pointer from guard Quinn Peoples at the 3:44 mark. After Burns came right back with a traditional three-point play for the Seawolves, the Yellowjackets drained four straight free throws to make it 75-70 with 1:51 left.

Jenna Buchanan sliced inside for a layup with 1:38 on the clock, but that would be the final points of the game. The Seawolves got three looks at a tying three-pointer in the final minute, including an around-the-rim-and-out attempt by Madison with two seconds left.

Madison shot 8 of 15 from the floor, while Burns was 5 of 8, along with four rebounds. Davis. Added six points, four assists, four steals and no turnovers in 27 minutes off the bench, and UAA got 8 points apiece from Buchanan and junior wing Alli Madison.

UAA saw its 5-game win streak end as the Yellowjackets avenged a 90-59 setback Dec. 5 in Anchorage.

MSUB will be the GNAC Tournament's top seed and play the winner of between #4 Simon Fraser and the #5 seed on Friday night. The entire event will be played in Lacey, Wash., and will feature live online video and live statistics. Seawolves fans can also listen live in Anchorage on FM-93.7 KAFC.
