UAA sweeps Simon Fraser to extend streaks

BURNABY, British Columbia – Sophomore setter Morgan Hooe had 33 assists and six kills Wednesday to pace a balanced Alaska Anchorage attack in a 29-27, 25-22, 25-10 volleyball sweep of Simon Fraser at the SFU West Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (8-2, 2-0 GNAC) got a match-high 12 kills from junior right-side hitter Julia Mackey as they improved their school-record road winning streak to 12 matches and remained unbeaten in nine all-time meetings against SFU.

Junior outside hitter Katelynn Zanders had 10 kills and eight digs, while sophomore middle blocker Kayla McGlathery recorded UAA's best attack percentage of 2014, hitting .667 (8 kills, 0 errors, 12 attacks).

The Clan (7-3, 1-1) were led by seven kills apiece from Kelsey Robinson and Mackenzie Dunham, but the Canadians could not pull out key points late in the first and second sets.

UAA fell behind 10-3 before rallying to tie the opening frame at 16-16. After several more ties, sophomore middle blocker Erin Braun (7 kills, .333 att%, 3 block assists) gave UAA set point with a kill to make it 24-22. Although the Clan would repel five more set points, the Seawolves finally clinched it with back-to-back kills from Zanders and Braun.

The Seawolves trailed 20-17 late in the second before posting another comeback. Tied at 22-22, Hooe snuck home consecutive kills and followed with a feed to Zanders for the kill on set point.

Hooe, from Anchorage's South High School, had her career-high in kills for the second straight night, while adding six digs and a solo block. The former Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year earned her six kills on just seven attack attempts.

UAA dominated the third by out-hitting the Clan .545 to .033, getting four kills from Mackey in the clincher.

Senior libero Quinn Barker had a match-high 17 digs, along with four assists, while senior outside hitter Brooke Pottle chipped in six kills and nine digs.

The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday at 7 p.m. for their Great Northwest Athletic Conference home opener against Montana State Billings. There will be a kids' autograph session with the team immediately following the match.
