Hot-hitting Seawolves sting 'Jackets, 3-1

ANCHORAGE – Junior Julia Mackey and sophomore Erin Braun paced another balanced offensive attack Saturday as the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team remained unbeaten in league play with a 25-17, 25-17, 16-25, 25-15 victory over Montana State Billings at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (9-2, 3-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) got 13 kills on .345 hitting from Mackey, while Braun recorded 10 kills on .600 hitting and a match-high four total blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Kayla McGlathery also had a dominant performance, connecting for kills on eight of her 10 swings for a UAA season-best .800 attack percentage.

The Yellowjackets (7-4, 2-1) were led by 13 kills form senior outside hitter Monica Grimsrud and 15 digs from libero Haley Wells, but the visitors were out-hit .309 to .156 and outblocked 7-1 in their first GNAC road trip of the year.

UAA jumped to a 10-1 lead in the first set as sophomore setter Morgan Hooe dished 12 of her 37 assists and helped the Seawolves to a .409 hitting percentage in the frame. MSUB hung closer in the second set before the Seawolves pulled away with a 5-1 run that made the score 19-13.

After Billings flipped the script in set 3, the Seawolves regained their composure and ran away with the fourth behind red-hot .520 (15-2-25) hitting. Braun, a middle blocker from San Bernardino, Calif., delivered seven on just eight attacks in the fourth, while Mackey had four kills on six attempts.

Senior libero Quinn Barker had a match-high 17 digs and added a pair of aces for the Seawolves, while junior outside hitter Katelynn Zanders finished with eight kills and 10 digs.

Up next for the Seawolves is a Monday night showdown against the only other team with a 3-0 GNAC record when Seattle Pacific (9-2, 3-0) visits the Alaska Airlines Center at 7 p.m.

NOTES: Saturday's attendance of 1,070 was the second-highest in program history, trailing only the 1,200 on opening night this year … the Seawolves improved to 41-10 all-time against MSUB, including a 22-4 mark in Anchorage … UAA's .309 attack percentage was a season-high … the Seawolves got a lift with the premiere of freshman Leah Swiss as the former Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year returned from an illness that cost her the first 10 matches … Swiss had three kills and four digs in her first collegiate action.
