'Wolves knock off #13 Wildcats on road, 3-2

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Paced by huge efforts from setter Morgan Hooe and outside hitter Katelynn Zanders, the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team hung on for its second road victory over a nationally ranked team this season with Saturday's 25-16, 19-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-7 win over No. 13 Central Washington at Nicholson Pavilion.

The Seawolves (11-3, 5-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) got eight or more kills from six different players, including a career-high 10 from Hooe, who also dished 52 assists, made seven digs and contributed on four blocks.

Meanwhile, Zanders smashed six of her match-high 20 kills in the fifth set as UAA dominated the final frame from start to finish, jumping to an 8-1 lead and never looking back. The junior all-conference performer added 17 digs and four assists.

The Wildcats (10-3, 3-2) were led by 18 kills from Kiah Jones and 28 digs by libero Kaely Kight as they lost for the first time in six home matches this year.

“Our team showed a lot of maturity tonight,” said UAA head coach Chris Green. “We lost our focus in the second set and made some silly mistakes, but our players did a good job of erasing that from their memories and played with a purpose the rest of the match. Morgan was especially outstanding in every aspect of the game. She is really coming into her own as one of the best setters in the league.”

Senior outside hitter Brooke Pottle (10 kills, 15 digs) and junior right-side hitter Julia Mackey (10 kills, 23 digs) joined Zanders in 'double-double' territory, while middle blockers Kayla McGlathery and Erin Braun tallied eight kills and four total blocks apiece.

Led by 24 digs from senior libero Quinn Barker, the Seawolves were especially stingy defensively, outhitting the Wildcats .237 to .168 and outblocking them 10-7.

UAA – picked to finished second in the GNAC preseason coaches' poll – has now completed its three road matches against the teams tabbed first (Western Washington), third (NW Nazarene) and fourth (CWU), suffering its only loss in Thursday's 3-1 setback to NNU. WWU was ranked No. 10 when the Seawolves earned a 3-2 win Sept. 16 in Bellingham.

Up next, the Seawolves return home for their next three matches, beginning with a 7 p.m. tilt against Saint Martin's on Thursday, Oct. 2 at the Alaska Airlines Center.
