Buzzeo leads Bulldogs past Seawolves, 3-2

ANCHORAGE – Alaska Anchorage senior Scott Allen had a pair of goals but a late surge by Justin Buzzeo and visiting Ferris State resulted in a 3-2 victory for the Bulldogs in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action at Sullivan Arena on Friday.

Ferris State (11-11-1, 8-6-0 WCHA) got two strikes from Buzzeo in the final eight minutes to earn a comeback victory over the Seawolves (5-11-4, 2-10-2) for the second straight night.

Following a scoreless first period, Allen gave UAA the lead when he took a nifty backhand feed from Brett Cameron and converted past Ferris State goalie CJ Motte. The Seawolves appeared ready to take their advantage into the locker room, especially with a penalty whistled against Ferris with just 2:15 left in the second. But the Bulldogs killed the penalty and Buzzeo picked up the puck and began a scoring rush finished by Matt Robertson with 7.7 seconds on the clock.

Buzzeo, a senior left wing, then broke the tie with 7:05 remaining in the third and added an insurance goal with 3:59 left to put the defending WCHA regular-season champions in control.

That would be an important cushion for the visitors from Michigan, with UAA picking up a man advantage just moments after the goal. Seawolves coach Matt Thomas pulled goaltender Michael Matyas (22 saves) for a 6-on-4 chance, and the risk paid off when Jarrett Brown's slapper off the boards bounced back to Allen, who swatted the low rebound past Motte with 2:16 remaining. Tatchell picked up his second assist of the night and 52nd of his career on the play.

Despite keeping the extra attacker for the remainder of the game, the Seawolves could not capitalize.

Up next, the Seawolves hit the road for six straight games, starting Jan. 16-17 with the first two contests against Alaska Fairbanks in the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup series. Both games start at 7 p.m. at the Carlson Center.
