#5 Seawolves race past Nanooks, 87-62

ANCHORAGE – Junior guard Jessica Madison scored 15 points to lead a balanced offense for No. 5 Alaska Anchorage in an 87-62 women's basketball victory over Alaska Fairbanks at the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday night.

The Seawolves (16-1, 6-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) put five players in double figures as they forged a 17-3 lead in the early going and cruised their 15th consecutive victory against their cross-state foes.

The Nanooks (12-5, 4-3) were led by 11 points and eight assists from point guard Benissa Bulaya, plus 11 points, five assists and three steals from forward Kaillee Skjold.

Madison – who had totaled just 18 points in the last four contests – snapped out of her shooting slump by draining a midrange jumper on the first possession and reached double figures in less than seven minutes when she put the Seawolves ahead 21-6 with a transition jumper at the 13:08 mark. The Port Angeles, Wash., native shot 6 of 11 from the field, including 3 of 6 from long range, along with five rebounds and three assists in a UAA season-high 35 minutes.

The Seawolves also got 13 points, seven assists and seven steals from sophomore point guard Kiki Robertson as they led by double figures for the final 37 minutes, including a 51-18 halftime advantage.

Senior Alli Madison and junior Megan Mullings both scored 12 points and junior guard Jenna Buchanan had 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting and six rebounds to lead the scoring parade for UAA, which won its fourth in a row.

The Seawolves got 6-of-6 free throw accuracy from both Alli Madison and senior forward KeKe Wright as they shot their second-best percentage of the season at .840 (21 of 25).

UAA – which is now tied with 12th-ranked Seattle Pacific for the GNAC lead – continues a three-game homestand when it hosts Western Washington on Thursday at 5:15 p.m. at the Alaska Airlines Center.

NOTES: UAA came into the game ranked No. 1 in the latest D2SIDA West Region poll, while UAF entered at No. 9 … the 33-point halftime lead tied for UAA's seventh-largest ever against a fellow Div. II opponent and matched the record for a conference game – also set against UAF (58-23, Feb. 27, 2010) … UAA extended its home win streak vs. UAF to 10 in a row … UAF's last win overall in the series came on Jan. 7, 2006 in Fairbanks (85-83, OT) … the Seawolves lead the all-time series 61-30 overall and 39-6 in Anchorage; this was the first-ever meeting at the Alaska Airlines Center.
