UAA's comeback falls short in Alabama

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Fresh from the Holiday Break, Alaska Anchorage's comeback fell short as the Seawolves dropped a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game to the Alabama Huntsville Chargers, 3-2 Friday at the Von Braun Center.

After falling behind 3-0, the Seawolves stormed back in the second period with goals by senior Scott Allen and freshman Tad Kozun but were unable find the equalizer in the final frame. The Seawolves fall to 5-8-4 on the season and 2-7-2 in league play, while the Chargers (3-10-0 WCHA) picked up their second win at home this season for a 4-14-3 overall mark.

Breaking a 10-game goal drought was Allen when he capitalized on a Seawolf power play at 13:13 of the second period. UAA's first strike of 2015 came courtesy of junior Blake Leask who fired from the blueline before Kozun picked up the rebound for UAA's co-captain.

After netting his first helper since the season opener against Maine, Kozun collected his second career multi-point game with his fourth career tally at 17:51, cutting the UAH lead to one. Setting up the play was sophomore Brad Duwe, who skated around a Chargers' defenseman to find Kozun rushing to the crease.

The Seawolves were given two power-play opportunities in the final four minutes of the game – including a 6-on-4 advantage with freshman Olivier Mantha on the bench for the extra attacker – but couldn't capitalize.

Scoring two back-to-back first-period goals for the Chargers was Max McHugh at 3:59 and 19:28, before Cody Marooney furnished the eventual game-winning goal at 2:03 of the second period.

For the first time in conference action this season, the Seawolves placed 30+ shots on net with 33, while the Chargers had 20 on target. Mantha (4-6-3) made 17 saves as Carmine Guerriero stopped 31.

The teams will meet again tomorrow at 4:07 p.m. AST.
