#3 Seawolves rumble past Vikings, 71-58

ANCHORAGE – Junior forward Megan Mullings scored a career-high 22 points and point guard Kiki Robertson dished eight assists Thursday to lead No. 3 Alaska Anchorage to a 71-58 women's basketball victory over Western Washington at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (17-1, 7-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 11 points apiece from reserves KeKe Wright and Jessica Madison to win their fifth straight and – thanks Seattle Pacific's upset loss at Western Oregon – pull into sole possession of first place in the league standings.

The Vikings (11-6, 5-3) got 19 points and four steals from guard Jenni White but were held to 36 percent shooting and forced into 22 turnovers. Ranked No. 9 in the latest D2SIDA West Region poll, WWU also saw its five-game win streak come to an end.

UAA led for all but one minute, taking the lead for good with back-to-back baskets by Robertson that made it 10-6 at the 14:30 mark. The Seawolves stretched their advantage to 28-13 before the Vikings made a run of their own, cutting it to 29-24 on two free throws by Kiana Gandy. But UAA senior Alli Madison dished to KeKe Wright for a layup to halt the charge, and finished the half with a driving layup that made it 35-24 at halftime.

After the break, Jessica Madison got hot from outside, making three three-pointers in the first seven minutes as the Seawolves slowly extended their lead.

Mullings shot 9 of 12 from the field to help UAA to a 50-26 scoring advantage in the paint and 14-4 on the fast break, where she was the recipient of multiple feeds from Robertson. Robertson added eight points and five steals with just one turnover, while junior guard Adriana Dent had three assists and four steals.

Alli Madison led the Seawolves with seven rebounds.

UAA returns to the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday for a showdown against second-place Simon Fraser (10-6, 6-2) at 5:15 p.m.
