Chargers sweep Seawolves with 2-1 win

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Despite going up 1-0 in the first, the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves were swept by the Alabama Huntsville Chargers with a 2-1 loss Saturday in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game at the Von Braun Center.

The Seawolves, who were swept for the second time of the season, fall to 5-9-4 overall and 2-8-2 in league play. UAA is now tied for ninth in the conference with Lake Superior State, each with six points each. UAH earned the sweep with a 3-2 win on Friday.

Scoring for the Seawolves was freshman Austin Azurdia, unassisted at 6:28 of the opening stanza. His first goal since the season opener against Maine, Azurdia gathered up a UAH turnover at the UAA blueline and carried it in to beat netminder Carmine Guerriero with a wrister.

The lead held until 10:50 of the second when Brandon Carlson furnished a power-play goal to knot the game. Exactly two minutes later, Cody Marooney collected the game-winning strike at 12:50.

Making his first collegiate start in net was freshman Jared D'Amico (0-1-0) with 25 saves, including 10 saves in the third period. Guerriero turned aside 27 shots as the Seawolves outshot the Chargers, 28-27.

The Seawolves were 0-for-5 on the man advantage, while the Chargers went 1-for-3.

UAA will return to the Sullivan Arena, Jan. 8-9 for a Thursday-Friday WCHA series. The games are scheduled to commence at 7:07 p.m. AST both nights. UAA will also hold Coaches Corner with Matt Thomas and Kurt Haider, Jan. 7 at the Varsity Sports Grill at 6 p.m., while Jan. 9 will also double as Military Appreciation Day.
