#3 UAA delivers payback at NW Nazarene, 97-83

NAMPA, Idaho – Juniors Megan Mullings and Jessica Madison recorded career-high scoring efforts and No. 3 Alaska Anchorage overcame a halftime deficit Saturday to avenge its lone loss with a 97-83 victory over Northwest Nazarene at the Johnson Sports Center.

Mullings scored 24 points on 11-of-14 shooting and grabbed five rebounds, while Madison had 23 points on 5-of-9 three-point accuracy. The Seawolves (20-1, 10-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) shot season-highs of 51.6 percent overall and 58.8 percent from beyond the arc.

The victory – UAA's eighth in a row since losing to the Crusaders on Jan. 1 in Anchorage – marks the 11th 20-win season in program history and the first under 3rd-year head coach Ryan McCarthy, a former Northwest Nazarene assistant.

The Crusaders (5-15, 3-8) were led by 23 points from forward Kate Cryderman plus 21 points and eight rebounds from forward Ellie Logan, but they could not hold on to a 42-41 halftime lead.

Trailing at the break for just the second time this year, the Seawolves started the second half with an 8-0 run and used a three-pointer by Jenna Buchanan to go ahead 52-44. Buchanan added another trey to fight off a late NNU run and finished with 17 points on 5-of-6 three-point shooting, along with four rebounds and two steals.

UAA extended to its largest lead when Madison fed Mullings for a layup that made it 70-54 with 9:26 remaining. The Crusaders shaved their deficit to 85-78 with just over two minutes left before the Seawolves clinched it from the free-throw line.

Mullings – the GNAC's leading field-goal percentage shooter – improved her numbers as she topped her previous high of 22 points and recorded UAA's second-highest output this year.

Buchanan and Madison also made significant leaps on UAA's career three-pointers list, with Madison moving into a tie for fifth place with Tamar Gruwell (125 3FGs, 2008-10) and Buchanan moving into the top 10 with 109.

The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center next week for games against Saint Martin's (Thur., Feb. 5, 7 p.m.) and Western Oregon (Sat., Feb. 7, 5:15 p.m.).
