#7 Seawolves wear down Wolves, 79-61

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The inside-outside combo of juniors Megan Mullings and Jenna Buchanan racked up 34 points Thursday to power 7th-ranked Alaska Anchorage to a 79-61 victory over Western Oregon in women's basketball action at the New P.E. Building.

The Seawolves (14-1, 4-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) shot 56 percent after the break to stretch a 35-34 halftime edge into a double-digit advantage over the final eight and a half minutes. Mullings shot 8 of 11 from the field and grabbed five rebounds, while Buchanan nailed five three-pointers – all in the second half – in seven attempts, along with three of UAA's 15 steals.

The Wolves (4-8, 1-3) were led by 17 points from guard Jordan Mottershaw and 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting from guard Katie Goddard as the hosts got hot from long range early and built a 20-11 lead. UAA turned up its full-court press at that point to spark a 14-0 run, and the teams went back and forth until halftime.

Buchanan swished her first three-pointer to give UAA a 42-38 edge with 16:42 remaining, and freshman forward Sierra Afoa (team-high 6 rebounds) made it 56-46 with two free throws at the 9:25 mark. The Wolves trailed just 57-48 before the Seawolves slammed the door with a three-point play from Mullings and back-to-back treys from Buchanan in a 90-second span.

The Seawolves also got nine points apiece from starting guards Alli Madison and Kiki Robertson, with that pair combining for seven assists. Junior point guard Adriana Dent dished five assists and made six steals in just 20 minutes, and senior forward KeKe Wright accounted for eight points on 3-of-3 shooting despite battling foul trouble all night.

UAA's win extends the longest streak in program history, beating Western Oregon for the 22nd consecutive time, including 12 straight in Monmouth.

The Seawolves complete their I-5 road trip Saturday when they face Saint Martin's at 4:15 p.m. in Lacey, Wash.
