#10 UAA sweeps Clan as Mackey reaches 1,000

ANCHORAGE – Seniors Julia Mackey and Caitlin Hanson combined for 21 kills Saturday as No. 10 Alaska Anchorage fended off Simon Fraser for a 25-15, 25-9, 25-23 volleyball sweep in front of another record crowd at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (16-2, 8-2 GNAC) also got a career-high 19 digs from libero Taylor Noga as they remained unbeaten in 11 all-time meetings against the NCAA's only Canadian program.

The Clan (9-9, 5-5) were led by seven kills from middle blocker Tessa May and 10 digs from libero Alison McKay, but they were out-hit .237 to .050, outblocked 10-3 and outdug 62-45 by the hosts.

A record crowd of 1,837 also watched as Mackey became the seventh player in Seawolf history to record 1,000 career kills, hitting the magic number in the third set to give UAA a 16-14 lead. SFU would bounce back, however, rallying for four straight points to tie it 23-23. Following a timeout, the Seawolves responded with junior Erin Braun's sixth kill, then clinched it on a block by Braun and senior Katelynn Zanders.

Hanson finished with eight kills on .667 hitting and four block assists, while Braun tallied a match-high five total blocks. Freshman outside hitter Leah Swiss had seven kills, six digs and three assists, and Zanders contributed five kills and 17 digs.

Junior setter Morgan Hooe dished 33 assists, along with 10 kills and five kills, helping Mackey (.370) and Braun (.333) to quality hitting percentages.

“I think we played well, especially after losing a tough, heartbreaking match on Thursday night (3-2 [16-14] vs. No. 16 Western Washington),” said Seawolf head coach Chris Green. “And the players responded well, so I'm very proud of them coming out and getting a good win tonight.”

Now at the halfway point of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference campaign, the Seawolves remain in a three-way tie with Northwest Nazarene and Central Washington for second place, trailing only WWU (16-2, 9-0).

The Seawolves finish a three-match homestand Tuesday when they host intrastate rival Alaska Fairbanks (2-15, 2-8) at 7 p.m. at the Alaska Airlines Center.

NOTES: Saturday's attendance figure gave UAA its fourth record crowd in the last five matches, breaking Thursday's mark of 1,748 … now with 1,001 kills, Mackey needs just 11 more to catch Sabrina Bingham (1996-99) for No. 6 all-time at UAA … filling in for injured regular libero Kyla Militante-Amper, Noga recorded her career-high in digs for the second straight match … junior Mikayla Sweet had a pair of aces for her first multi-ace match as a Seawolf, while committing no service errors … the Seawolves avoided losing back-to-back regular season matches for the first time since Oct. 22 & 24, 2013 … UAA has won 33 of 35 sets against SFU since the Clan joined the GNAC in 2010.
