Volleyball sweeps SPU, equals longest streak

ANCHORAGE – Seniors Julia Mackey and Katelynn Zanders each delivered double-doubles Thursday to power No. 8 Alaska Anchorage to a 25-13, 25-21, 26-24 volleyball sweep of Seattle Pacific at the Alaska Airlines Center.

A near-record crowd of 1,339 also saw freshman libero Kyla Militante-Amper equal her team-season-best 23 digs as the Seawolves improved to 13-0 overall – matching the longest win streak in program history – and 5-0 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

The Falcons (4-9, 2-3) got seven kills and 13 digs from sophomore right-side hitter Hannah Lautenbach as their two-match win streak came to an end.

Mackey, who entered with a GNAC-best .366 attack percentage, connected for kills on her first five attempts and finished with 13 kills on .360 hitting. The three-time All-GNAC right-side hitter also added 16 digs, three blocks and three assists, including the helper on Zanders's match-point kill.

Zanders registered five of her 10 kills in the second set, but her most memorable plays came in crunch time in the third frame. After surrendering leads of 21-15 and 24-22, the Seawolves found themselves knotted at 24 when setter Morgan Hooe was called in the net on an attack attempt. Hooe redeemed herself by feeding Zanders for a thundering kill down the middle, though, and the Seawolves clinched the sweep when freshman Taylor Noga a tough dig, allowing Mackey to feed Zanders with an impressive desperation set for the final kill.

Hooe tallied 33 assists, four kills and five digs to help the Seawolves out-hit the Falcons .242 to .059, while Militante-Amper had the most digs in a 3-set match for a UAA player since Quinn Barker's 23 against Saint Martin's on Oct. 2, 2014.

Zanders collected 14 digs to earn her team-best sixth double-double of the year and 26th of her 4-year career. In the final set, the former South Anchorage High School star also became the third Seawolf in program history to surpass 1,200 kills, now with 1,202.

Freshman Leah Swiss just missed her third double-double, collecting nine kills and nine digs, and junior middle blocker Erin Braun racked up eight kills on .318 hitting and a pair of blocks.

The Seawolves – who matched the 13 straight wins of UAA's 2009 GNAC title team – can claim the record for themselves with a home victory Saturday (7 p.m.) against Saint Martin's.

NOTES: The 25-13 first-set score gave the Seawolves seven straight set victories holding their opponent to 15 points or less … Thursday's crowd was second-best in program history, trailing only the 1,366 that showed up Sept. 24 to watch a 3-0 sweep of Montana State Billings … Mackey pushed her career total to 952 kills, moving into No. 8 on the Seawolves' all-time list … freshman middle blocker Alex Garrett saw her first action since Sept. 10, registering a kill, three block assists, two digs and her first career assist … UAA evened the all-time home series with SPU at 12-12 and cut the Falcons' overall series advantage to 28-20; the five straight wins against SPU extend the best Seawolf streak in series history.
