Seniors help #13 UAA dispatch UAF in four

ANCHORAGE – Seniors Katelynn Zanders and Julia Mackey combined for 23 kills Tuesday as 13th-ranked Alaska Anchorage ran away with a 25-16, 23-25, 25-10, 25-12 volleyball victory over Alaska Fairbanks at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (17-2, 9-2 GNAC) got 13 kills on .462 hitting from Zanders, who added seven digs, while Mackey finished with 10 kills on .368 accuracy, along with seven digs and three assists. Middle blocker Caitlin Hanson added eight kills and a match-high four blocks as UAA's three seniors finished their respective careers unbeaten against UAF, helping the Seawolves extend their series-record win streak to 11 matches.

The Nanooks (2-16, 2-9) got a match-high 16 kills from senior outside hitter Sam Harthun, but the visitors could not carry over any momentum from their 2nd-set victory.

UAA finished with a .291 to .031 overall edge in attack percentage, but the gulf widened in the final two sets to .382 to -.132.

Freshman outside hitter Leah Swiss added seven kills, five digs and four of UAA's season-high 10 aces, while junior setter Morgan Hooe dished 34 assists to go with 10 digs, two blocks (one solo), two aces and two kills.

With the victory, UAA moves alone into second place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings ahead of idle Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene.

The Seawolves head south later this week for the first of three straight road matches, facing Montana State Billings on Saturday (5 p.m. ADT) at Alterowitz Gymnasium.

NOTES: While Tuesday's crowd of 1,397 did not break another Seawolf Volleyball attendance record, it still ranked as the 11th-highest crowd in NCAA Div. II this season, giving UAA six of the top 14 figures in the nation … UAA now leads the all-time series with UAF 66-34, including 37-12 in Anchorage … UAF's last win against UAA was a 4-set decision, Sept. 18, 2010 in Anchorage … Zanders's .462 attack percentage was her second-best this season and her best in a GNAC match since a career-high .615 effort on Oct. 12, 2013 at UAF … now with 1,011 career kills, Mackey has moved within one of No. 6 (Sabrina Bingham, 1,012 kills, 1996-99) on UAA's all-time list; No. 5 (Brianne McCabe, 1,024, 1999-2002) is also within striking distance … with her two block assists Tuesday, Mackey also became just the fourth player in program history (Bingham, McCabe, Jen Szczerbinski) to record at least 1,000 kills and 200 total blocks … Swiss served at least four aces for the third time this season, overtaking Zanders (27-26) for the team lead and the No. 2 average (0.39 aces per set) in the GNAC.
