Seawolves crush Cardinals in Tip-Off opener

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Senior guard Jessica Madison scored 18 points to lead a first-half onslaught Friday as the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team earned a season-opening 90-63 victory over William Jewell in the CCA Div. II Tip-Off Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center.

The Seawolves also got 14 points apiece from senior guard Jenna Buchanan and junior forward Alysha Devine as they combined for seven of their team's school-record 15 three-pointers.

The Cardinals, from Liberty, Mo., were led by 15 points and five rebounds from freshman forward Blair Klostermann, but the Great Lakes Valley Conference squad could not handle the Seawolves' pressure, committing 25 turnovers and shooting just 30.6 percent (15 of 49) from the field.

UAA – coming off a 29-2 campaign and this year's preseason favorite in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference – shot 45.5 percent overall (30 of 66), including 15-of-30 accuracy from long range. Madison and freshman guard Tara Thompson each shot 4 of 5 on treys, while Devine was 3 of 5 and Buchanan 4 of 8.

Thompson finished with 12 points to put four Seawolves in double figures, and GNAC Preseason Player of the Year Megan Mullings had with nine points and three steals as the Seawolves put 11 of their 12 active players in the scoring column.

William Jewell converted the first basket of the game but the Seawolves took over quickly, extending to a 17-6 lead on back-to-back three-pointers by Madison. UAA led 24-14 after the first quarter and 55-27 at halftime, earning its largest lead to 74-41 early in the fourth quarter.

Senior point guard Christina Davis had a solid outing in her return from a redshirt season, tallying a game-high nine assists, and making three of UAA's 12 steals.

The Seawolves are back in action Saturday with a key West Region showdown against Cal State Dominguez Hills, which suffered a 66-63 loss to Winona State in the Tip-Off opener Friday. The Seawolves and Toros will tip at 7:30 p.m. ADT in a battle of the top two seeds in last year's West Regional Championships. Live audio and live stats links are available at GoSeawolves.com.

NOTES: The Seawolves broke the old record of 14 three-pointers in a game, set four times previously, most recently against North Dakota State in Nov. 2012 … Friday's meeting was the first ever between UAA and William Jewell … Thompson and fellow redshirt freshman Hannah Wandersee saw their first action in Seawolf uniforms, with Wandersee tallying three points and three rebounds … UAA won despite committing 35 fouls and 23 turnovers.
