#8 Seawolves blank Saints for record victory

ANCHORAGE – Freshman Leah Swiss delivered 11 kills Saturday to lead the nationally 8th-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to its record-setting 14th straight victory, knocking off Saint Martin's 25-8, 25-18, 25-18.

An Alaska Airlines Center record-setting crowd of 1,488 also watched senior Katelynn Zanders post nine kills and nine digs as the Seawolves (14-0, 6-0 GNAC) won their 15th in a row against the visitors from Lacey, Wash.

The Saints (2-10, 1-5) got eight kills and 12 digs from outside hitter Rebecca Mitchell, but they were out-hit .263 to .000 and outlbocked 11-2.

After pulling away early in the first two sets, the Seawolves led just 17-15 late in the third when two straight SMU errors opened the door on a 5-0 run. Swiss – who hit .375 on the night – capped the rally with her final kill, and the outside hitter from Dimond High School finished the match with an ace a few points later.

Freshman libero Kyla Militante-Amper anchored the back row with 14 digs, while senior right-side hitter Julia Mackey was all over the stat sheet with six kills, 13 digs, three blocks, two assists and a career-high three aces.

Freshman middle blocker Alex Garrett – filling in for injured regular starter Caitlin Hanson – had the best match of her young career with five kills and no errors on nine attacks (.556), plus three total blocks. Junior middle blocker Erin Braun added three kills and a match-high seven block assists, while setter Morgan Hooe tallied 27 assists.

With Saturday's victory, this year's Seawolves surpassed the 13 straight wins by UAA's 2009 Great Northwest Athletic Conference title squad.

UAA returns to the road next week for huge showdowns against defending GNAC champion Northwest Nazarene (Thur., Oct. 8, 5 p.m. ADT) and fellow playoff contender Central Washington (Sat., Oct. 10, 6 p.m. ADT). Both matches can be seen live at portal.stretchinternet.com/uaa.

NOTES: UAA's 15 straight victories against Saint Martin's extends the program's longest streak against any opponent … the Saints have not beaten the UAA since sweeping the season series in 2007 … the record crowd of 1,488 topped the 1,366 that came out Sept. 24 to watch UAA's 3-0 sweep of Montana State Billings … after facing four straight opponents with a current combined record of 10-43, UAA's next three matches will come against teams with a combined current record of 28-15.
