#11 Seawolves fend off Clan in Canada, 3-1

BURNABY, British Columbia – Freshman Leah Swiss led a balanced attack for No. 11 Alaska Anchorage with 10 kills and 11 digs Friday to help the Seawolves to a 25-21, 25-12, 24-26, 25-18 volleyball victory over Simon Fraser at the SFU West Gymnasium.

Senior middle blocker Caitlin Hanson added nine kills (23-2, 15-2 GNAC) and a career-high 10 total blocks to help the Seawolves (23-2, 15-2 GNAC) to their eight straight victory and set up a huge Great Northwest Athletic Conference first-place showdown against No. 16 Western Washington (21-4, 15-2) on Saturday night in Bellingham.

The Clan (12-13, 8-9) were led by 11 points and 18 digs from outside hitter Devon May, while middle blocker Tessa May had 10 kills on .476 hitting, but the NCAA's lone Canadian program fell to 0-12 all-time against the Seawolves.

Senior Katelynn Zanders added 10 kills – including match point – and a career-high 22 digs, while freshman libero Kyla Militante-Amper equaled her season-best with 23 digs. Senior right-side hitter Julia Mackey had 10 kills, seven total blocks and eight digs, and junior middle blocker Erin Braun tallied eight kills and five block assists as UAA out-hit SFU .221 to .079 and outblocked them 16-4.

Saturday's 6 p.m. match at WWU will mark the Seawolves' final road contest of the regular season and pit the top two teams in the current NCAA Div. II West Region rankings, which go toward determining the host role for the regional playoffs. WWU defeated UAA 3-2 (16-14) on Oct. 15 in Anchorage in the teams' first meeting.

NOTES: UAA's 23 victories match the 1989 and 2009 teams for the second-most in program history and are just one shy of the school record (1990 & 1992) … at 23-2 UAA has now clinched the best winning percentage in program history, topping last year's 21-6 (.778) club … UAA's 16 team blocks topped the previous season-high of 15 against then-No. 23 Rockhurst on Sept. 4 … Zanders topped her old career high of 20 digs from Oct. 16, 2014 at Seattle Pacific … Hanson's 10 stuffs topped her old career high of nine at Cal Baptist on Sept. 12, 2014 … Zanders's double-double was her 13th this year and 33rd of her career, while Swiss posted her fourth double-double this season.
