Robertson paces UAA past HPU in homecoming

HONOLULU – Junior point guard Kiki Robertson led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points Tuesday to help the nationally 7th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to a 62-51 victory over Hawaii Pacific at Moanalua High School.

The Seawolves (8-0) also got 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting from senior forward Megan Mullings, plus 11 points and seven rebounds from senior guard Jenna Buchanan as they improved the program's school-record road winning streak to 10 games, including all of last season.

The defending Pacific West Conference champion Sharks (1-2) got a game-high 16 points from guard Brianne Yasukochi, but the hosts were outrebounded 43-32 and forced into 27 turnovers by UAA's full-court press. Jessi Reeves added 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting for HPU, with the rest of the Sharks going 9 of 36.

After building a 26-19 lead with 3:15 left in the second quarter, the Seawolves went on a 15-0 run spanning halftime to take control. Robertson was the catalyst during the deciding spurt as the former Honolulu prep star (Mid-Pacific Institute) shot 4 of 8 from the field and 6 of 8 from the free-throw line, along with five rebounds, two assists and two steals in just 17 minutes.

Trailing 41-19, the Sharks – picked fourth in the Pac West's preseason coaches' poll – answered with a surge of their own to crawl within 44-33 late in the third. However, senior guard Christina Davis fed Mullings for a layup and Jessica Madison for a three-pointer to end the period.

Jenna Buchanan scored three of her 10 points on a long-range dagger with 7 minutes left to make it a 56-35 game, and the Sharks nibbled into their deficit the rest of the way. UAA played the final 4:46 without either Mullings or Robertson, who combined for 10 of UAA's 30 fouls. HPU shot 19 of 30 from the free throw line to stay close, while the Seawolves went 7 of 12 from the charity stripe.

Keiahnna Engel added 10 points on 2-of-3 three-point shooting and fellow senior guard Adriana Dent had five points and five rebounds as the Seawolves got all of their scoring from six players.

The Seawolves travel next to the Big Island for a pair of games against Hawaii-Hilo on Thursday and Friday. Both contests start at 7 p.m. AST, with coverage links available at the women's basketball schedule page at GoSeawolves.com.

NOTES: The result snaps UAA's program-record streak of scoring at least 80 points in seven straight games … UAA improved to 6-0 all-time against the Sharks and 26-0 all-time against Hawaii's four NCAA Div. II programs … Mullings scored in double figures for the fifth straight time and Buchanan tallied double figures for the seventh time in eight outings this year … Madison is now just 11 points shy of becoming the 13th player in program history to reach 1,000 in her career … Buchanan now sits with exactly 900 career points, moving into 16th place on UAA's career list.
