ANCHORAGE – Junior setter
Morgan Hooe orchestrated a balanced offensive attack with 39 assists Thursday, helping 11th-ranked Alaska Anchorage claim no worse than a share for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball title with 25-21, 25-23, 25-14 victory over Concordia (Ore.) at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (25-2, 17-2 GNAC) won for the 10th straight time as they earned the GNAC's automatic NCAA Tournament berth and strengthened their hold on the No. 1 ranking in the West Region. Should UAA earn the title outright with a win over Western Oregon (7 p.m.) in Saturday's regular-season finale, it would be in excellent position to earn the host role for the Dec. 3-5 NCAA West Regional Championships.
Freshman outside hitter
Leah Swiss led the Seawolves with 13 kills on .323 hitting, while seniors
Julia Mackey and
Katelynn Zanders blasted 12 kills apiece. Zanders also added 10 digs for her fifth straight double-double, helping UAA to lopsided advantages in attack pct. (.295 to .155) and digs (54-39).
Winding down its first year as a full-fledged NCAA Div. II and GNAC member, Concordia (17-10, 9-10) was led by nine kills and 11 digs from outside hitter Brenna Huwe. The visitors from Portland also got seven kills on .368 hitting and four block assists from Colby Barnette.
Hooe tallied 13 digs and five kills, while dishing 14 of her assists in the second set to help UAA rally from a 14-9 deficit in that frame. After trailing virtually the entire set, Swiss knotted the second at 19-19 with consecutive kills, and senior middle blocker
Caitlin Hanson put UAA ahead for good with a kill to make it 23-22. The Cavaliers fought off one set point on a kill by Lindsey Dorsey, but Zanders delivered a thundering slam down the middle for the 2-0 lead.
Swiss delivered three kills in the first 11 rallies of the third set to power UAA to an early 9-4 lead, and the advantage continued to grow until Mackey ended things with a kill on match point.
Freshman libero
Kyla Militante-Amper continued her strong play of late with 17 digs and five assists in the sweep.
UAA's title is its second in the 15-year history of the GNAC, along with the outright title from 2009. The Seawolves' NCAA berth is their third consecutive and sixth in the past seven seasons, after the program captured just two NCAA bids in its first 29 years.
Thursday's win also established new program best for victories in a season, surpassing the 24 from 1990 and 1992.
NOTES: Zanders moved into fifth place on the GNAC's career kills list, now with 1,385 … Zanders claimed her 15th double-double of 2015 and ran her career total to 35 such performances … Thursday's attendance of 1,378 helped UAA improve upon its NCAA Div. II-best average, which stood at 1,294 entering the night … UAA has won five straight against Western Oregon heading into Saturday's 'Senior Night' festivities.
