Patriots outlast Waves for 3rd place

ANCHORAGE – Junior guard Kara Wright scored 20 points Wednesday to help George Mason hang on for a 71-63 victory over Pepperdine in the third-place game of the women's GCI Great Alaska Shootout at the Alaska Airlines Center.

Wright shot 7 of 12 from the floor and dished a game-high four assists as the Patriots (2-4) outshot their opponents 39 per cent to 30 percent. Forward Tiffany Padgett added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Atlantic 10 Conference club, while guard Taylor Brown had 11 points and four rebounds.

The Waves (1-5) got 20 points and 13 rebounds from freshman guard Erica Ogwumike and 18 points from forward Keitra Wallace, but the West Coast Conference team could never take the lead in the second half.

George Mason took control of a close game with a 14-6 run over the last 4:43 of the first half, with forward Kristi Mokube adding 11 points off the bench.
