Bulldogs bite Dragons with big 2nd half, 85-66

ANCHORAGE – UNC Asheville forward Sam Hughes scored 18 points and teammate Dwayne Sutton added 14 points and nine rebounds Thursday to lead the Bulldogs to an 85-66 win over Drexel in the final first-round game of the GCI Great Alaska Shootout at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Bulldogs (2-3) also got 14 points, six rebounds and three assists from guard Ahmad Thomas as they used  big second half to pull away late.

The Dragons (0-4) got game-highs of 19 points (7-10 FG) and six assists from guard Terrell Allen, but the rest of his teammates combined to shoot just 15 of 41 from the field.

UNC Asheville trailed 38-34 at halftime before starting the second half with a 16-2 run to take control. Drexel cut its deficit to 56-50 on two free throws by Allen with 10:39 remaining, but Asheville responded with a 10-0 run and led by double figures the rest of the way.

The Bulldogs advance to play Middle Tennessee in Friday's 8 p.m. semifinal contest, while the Dragons will face host Alaska Anchorage in the consolation semifinals Friday at 2 p.m.
