Mavericks shut out Seawolves' offense

MANKATO, Minn. – Despite a season-high 40-save night from sophomore goaltender Olivier Mantha the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves dropped a 2-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association game to the host Minnesota State Mavericks at the Verizon Wireless Center Friday.

Mantha gave UAA – which falls to 3-3-2 in league play and 6-5-2 overall – the opportunity to defeat the Mavericks (7-6-2, 6-1-2 WCHA), but the offense managed a season-low 12 shots on net. MSU used a goal in the second and the third to extend its unbeaten streak to four games, while the Seawolves are winless in three.

UAA's MVP from last season, Mantha (5-5-2) produced a .952 save percentage in the game, improving his season's save percentage to .918. In conference play, Mantha sports a .934 save percentage, good for fourth best in the league.

Meanwhile, the Mavericks – who attempted 69 shots, finding the target 42 times – scored their first goal at 15:03 of the second when Bryce Gervais got by Mantha with a backhander, glove-side, from the center slot. Chandler Madry picked up his first goal of the season when he flung the puck over Mantha's shoulder at 15:29 of the third.

The Seawolves pulled Mantha for the final two minutes of the third, where they were able to get two solid – and the only shots of the frame – on net.

MSU freshman netminder Jason Pawloski (4-0-2) collected his first college shutout. The Seawolves were also shut out on Nov. 1 to then-No. 12 ranked Bowling Green (2-0).

Both teams were scoreless on the power play, with UAA going 0-for-4 and MSU going 0-for-7. The Seawolves spent 22 minutes in the box to the Mavericks' 16.

UAA will look to redeem itself tomorrow as the Seawolves look for their first win at the Verizon Wireless Center in four years. The puck is scheduled to drop at 4:07 p.m. AST.
