Seniors pace #6 UAA past UAF, 78-56

ANCHORAGE – Senior Jessica Madison paced four double-figure scorers with 17 points Saturday to lift 6th-ranked Alaska Anchorage to a 78-56 women's basketball victory over Alaska Fairbanks at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (13-1, 2-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals from senior guard Jenna Buchanan as they rebounded from their first loss of the season and extended their series-best win streak to 17 games against their in-state rivals.

The Nanooks (5-6, 0-3) got a game-high 21 points from junior guard Jaylee Mays, while senior guard Arinesha Smith dished seven assists.

UAF grabbed a 6-4 lead on a layup by Kaillee Skjold midway through the first quarter before the Seawolves responded with a 19-3 run over the next seven and a half minutes, capped by a transition layup by Megan Mullings.

The Seawolves took a 34-15 lead at halftime – marking their fifth-fewest points allowed in in the first half of GNAC game – when freshman guard Tara Thompson launched a running, 35-foot three-pointer that beat the buzzer.

Buchanan made it 44-22 at the 4:39 mark of the third quarter with one of her five three-pointers, but the visitors charged back to get within 49-36 on Jordan Wilson's short jumper at the end of the period.

Leading 57-45, UAA retook control for good on Buchanan's three-pointer at the 4:08 mark of the fourth quarter.

Mullings finished with 14 points and senior Keiahnna Engel had 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting, six rebounds and a pair of assists in just 19 minutes. Junior point guard Kiki Robertson fought through foul trouble to collect four points, four rebounds, five assists and no turnovers, and junior forward Alysha Devine contributed six points on 3-of-5 shooting.

Madison shot 6 of 12 from the field as she led the Seawolves in scoring for the fifth time this season and crawled within two points of No. 12 on the program's career scoring list, now with 1,058.

Meanwhile, Buchanan is now just five points shy of joining Madison as the 14th member of UAA's 1,000-point club, and with her third trey Saturday, the Galena native moved past Tanya Nizich (177 3FGs, 2000-04) for No. 2 on UAA's career list. Now with 180, Buchanan needs just 10 treys more to catch Allegra Stoetzel (190, 1992-96) for the program record.

UAA returns to the Alaska Airlines Center next week for its final two non-conference games when it hosts Cedarville (Ohio) and nationally ranked UC San Diego in the Seawolf Hoops Classic, Dec. 19-20. For complete Seawolf ticket information, visit GoSeawolves.com or call 907-786-1562.

NOTES: The Seawolves now lead the all-time series 63-30 against UAF, including 40-6 in Anchorage … UAA has won 11 straight at home in the series, while the 17 straight wins overall are the second-longest streak against any opponent (23 vs Western Oregon, current) … Madison hit two three-pointers Saturday to run her career total to 172 and come within five of No. 3 on the program list … Mullings had one block to run her career total to 63 and take over seventh place alone on UAA's career list … Robertson is now just three assists shy of becoming in the fourth Seawolf to reach 400 for her career.
