#5 Seawolves repel Yellowjackets, 70-50

ANCHORAGE – Senior forward Megan Mullings scored 20 points and junior point guard Kiki Robertson tallied 11 points, seven steals and three assists to lift nationally 5th-ranked Alaska Anchorage to a 70-50 women's basketball victory over Montana State Billings at the Alaska Airlines Center on Thursday night.

The Seawolves (16-1, 3-1 GNAC) also got 11 points and five assists from senior guard Jenna Buchanan and a career-high 10 rebounds from junior forward Alysha Devine to prevail in the battle of the last two Great Northwest Athletic Conference champions.

The Yellowjackets (6-5, 2-1) were led by 14 points and five rebounds from guard Alisha Breen but could not overcome a 46-24 rebounding disadvantage.

Facing a 16-11 deficit with 2:35 left in the first quarter, UAA took control with a 20-0 run and earned a 33-23 lead at halftime.

MSUB stayed close, however, as Monica Grimsrud knocked down a corner three-pointer to draw within 35-32 midway through the third quarter. Buchanan provided the biggest answers of the game on the ensuing possessions, drilling her own three-pointer, then dishing to Keiahnna Engel for another trey.

Mullings – who shot 8 of 12 from the field – made it 52-44 with a pair of free throws at the 5:22 mark of the fourth quarter, before the GNAC Preseason Player of the Year fouled out 25 seconds later. The rest of the Seawolves responded to outscore the Yellowjackets 18-6 from that point, sparked by a three-pointer from Devine and a pull-up jumper from Robertson.

The Seawolves close a six-game homestand when they face Western Oregon (Thur., Jan. 7, 7:30 p.m.) and league newcomer Concordia (Sat., Jan. 9, Noon) in GNAC games at the Alaska Airlines Center next week. Call 907-786-1562 for tickets for visit GoSeawolves.com for complete information.
