Vikings upset #3 Seawolves, 71-62

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Senior Jenna Buchanan scored 18 points but it was not enough to help the nationally 3rd-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team avoid the upset Saturday in a 71-62 loss to Western Washington at Whatcom Pavilion.

The Seawolves (12-1, 1-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 16 points and six rebounds from reserve center Hannah Wandersee as their school-record 13-game road winning streak came to an end.

The Vikings (5-3, 2-0) were led by 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting from center Kayla Bernsen, while forward Tia Briggs tallied 18 points and 10 rebounds.

UAA controlled action in the first half and went into the break with a 32-25 lead, but the hosts took control in the third quarter, outscoring the Seawolves 24-10.

After missing her first five three-pointers Buchanan finally knocked down a pair of treys to get the Seawolves within 62-59 in the late-going. The Vikings answered that run, however, and took advantage of foul trouble on GNAC Preseason Player of the Year Megan Mullings (7 pts) and Buchanan to hold on from the free throw line.

Wandersee shot 5 of 7 from the field and 6 of 6 at the foul stripe, but the rest of the Seawolves combined to shoot just 16 of 54 (.296).

The loss also snapped UAA's program record of 18 straight victories in road or neutral contests, and it leaves this year's squad tied with the 2006-07 and 2014-15 teams for the best start to a season.

UAA returns to league action next week with its GNAC home opener, Saturday, Dec. 12 against Alaska Fairbanks. Tip is set for 2 p.m. at the Alaska Airlines Center. For ticket information, visit GoSeawolves.com or call 907-786-1562.
