Wildcats race past UAA in 2nd half, 80-67

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Junior guard Dom Hunter scored 21 points but the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team could not overcome a big second-half run by host Central Washington, losing 80-67 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action Thursday at Nicholson Pavilion.

The Seawolves (14-11, 10-5 GNAC) also got 12 points from Derrick Fain and 11 points from fellow senior guard Travis Thompson as they fell into a three-way tie for second place in the GNAC with CWU and idle Seattle Pacific.

The Wildcats (15-7, 10-5) were led by a game-high 26 points from senior guard Dom Williams, who shot 4 of 8 from long range and 6 of 6 at the free-throw line. Junior center Joseph Stroud tallied 12 points on 6-of-9 marksmanship and grabbed nine rebounds to help the hosts sweep the season series from UAA.

The Seawolves took a 32-31 halftime lead when sophomore forward Travis Parrish nailed a jumper right before the buzzer. The Wildcats responded with a 5-0 spurt to start the second half, holding UAA without a field goal until Hunter nailed a three-pointer at the 14:21 mark.

Thompson scored on a feed from Hunter to cut the deficit to 48-46 with 10:37 remaining, but Williams earned two straight baskets to start a clinching 17-2 run. UAA got within single digits only once more, 74-65, on a pair of Thompson free throws with 1:15 on the clock.

Parrish tied for game-high honors with a career-best nine rebounds, while Fain and Thompson dished three assists apiece.

UAA has another big game to finish the road portion of the GNAC schedule when it visits Northwest Nazarene on Saturday for a 5 p.m. AST tip-off in Nampa, Idaho. The Crusaders (11-14, 9-6) sit fifth in the league standings but just a game behind the second-place trio. The top two teams in the final standings earn a first-round bye for the GNAC Tournament, Mar. 4-7 in Billings, Mont.
