Beavers edge Seawolves, 3-2

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves dropped their seventh straight loss with a 3-2 defeat courtesy of the Bemidji State Beavers in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game Friday at the Sanford Center.

After an early Beaver goal, the Seawolves (7-18-4, 4-16-2) responded with two first-period strikes to take their first lead of a game since Jan. 17 vs. Alaska Fairbanks. Unfortunately, the lead wouldn't hold as BSU (13-14-1, 9-10-4 WCHA) responded in the second stanza with two of their own.

Following the Beaver's Kyle Bauman's first of two tallies of the night, the Seawolves knotted the game at 15:50 of the opening period with their first power-play strike in four games. From below the goal line, senior Brett Cameron found freshman Anthony Conti outside the crease for his third on the season.

UAA, which outshot BSU, 12-9 in the first, kept the momentum going as sophomore Dylan Hubbs furnished his career-high fifth goal of season on sophomore Brad Duwe's rebound at 19:10. Freshman Matt Anholt was credited with the second helper on the play.

The teams went into the first intermission with UAA on top, 2-1. UAA is now 6-2-1 when leading after the first period.

Bauman's second of the night came at 2:01 when he split the Seawolf defense for a breakaway. Charlie O'Connor registered the game-winning goal at 8:19, top-shelf, as both teams were scoreless in the final 20 minutes of play.

Freshman Olivier Mantha made 23 saves in the loss as he falls to 6-14-3 on the season, while Michael Bitzer turned aside 22 shots for an 11-9-2 record. BSU managed 26 shots to UAA's 24.

The Seawolves, who entered the game with the nation high in penalty minutes per game, posted a season-best one penalty.

The Seawolves will look for their second-ever win in Bemidji tomorrow with puck drop scheduled at 4:07 p.m. AST.
