Mullings, Robertson power #1 UAA past #19 SPU

ANCHORAGE – Megan Mullings scored a career-high 29 points and Kiki Robertson nearly collected a triple-double Thursday to lead nationally top-ranked Alaska Anchorage to an 83-70 women's basketball victory over 19th-ranked Seattle Pacific at the Alaska Airlines Center.

Robertson, a sophomore point guard, finished with nine points, nine rebounds, nine assists and four steals as the Seawolves (26-1, 16-1 GNAC) won their 14th in a row and completed a season sweep of the Falcons, who fell into a second-place tie in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

SPU (20-5, 12-5) was led by 15 points and seven assists from senior point guard Suzanna Ohlsen, while forward Maddey Pflaumer had 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting and five rebounds.

The Falcons – ranked No. 5 in the NCAA West Region – jumped to a 9-4 lead with three-pointers on three of their first four possessions, but the Seawolves quickly took control with their full-court press.

UAA responded with a 22-3 run over the next 13 minutes as Mullings made all five of her field goals, staking the hosts to a 37-25 halftime advantage.

The Seawolves saw their lead trimmed to seven twice in the second half, with Pflaumer's layup making it 51-44 at the 13:16 mark. But UAA forward KeKe Wright stopped the Falcons' momentum with two free throws on the next possession, and Mullings converted a layup on a feed from Robertson to begin a 10-0 UAA run. The Falcons drew within 65-55 with 5:48 remaining before UAA pulled away for good.

Senior forward Alli Madison stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals, and junior guard Jessica Madison added 11 points and four rebounds.

UAA – which leads NCAA Div. II in steals per game – collected 17 swipes and forced 27 SPU turnovers, along with a 43-35 rebounding edge.

Mullings added eight rebounds and three steals as the Glendale, Ariz., native shot 11 of 14 from the floor and made 7 of 9 free throws. Her 29 points were the most for a Seawolf since Sasha King collected 34 in a win at Northwest Nazarene on Feb. 16, 2013.

Meanwhile, Robertson missed her career-high by just one rebound and dished at least five assists for the 11th straight time. Wright finished with seven points and four boards.

After clinching the GNAC title last week, the Seawolves finish the regular season on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host Montana State Billings at the Alaska Airlines Center. UAA will be the No. 1 seed for the GNAC Tournament the following week, taking the court on Mar. 6 at 12:15 p.m. in the semifinal round.

NOTES: The Seawolves have beaten the Falcons six straight times both overall and in Anchorage … UAA's current 14-game win streak is the third-longest in program history, trailing the record 22-game streak from 2008-09 and a 15-game streak in 1987-88 … prior to Thursday, UAA's season-high had been 26 points by Wright against Simon Fraser on Jan. 24, while Mullings's high had been 24 points at Northwest Nazarene on Jan. 31.
