Seawolves smash Saints in home finale, 101-67

ANCHORAGE – Senior guards Travis Thompson and Derrick Fain combined for 41 points and 13 assists in their final home game to lift Alaska Anchorage to a 101-67 men's basketball blowout of Saint Martin's at the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday.

The Seawolves (16-12, 12-6 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 19 points and nine assists from junior point guard Brian McGill as they a tied for third place in the final league standings with Central Washington. UAA will be the No. 4 seed for the GNAC Tournament and play No. 5 seed Western Washington (18-10, 11-7) in Thursday's quarterfinals at 5:30 p.m. (AST) in Billings, Mont.

The Saints (6-22, 3-15) were led by 16 points, three assists and three steals from senior guard Riley Carel as the visitors from Lacey, Wash., ended the year on a seven-game losing skid.

UAA trailed 11-7 early and did not take the lead for good until Fain's three-pointer made it 23-21 at the 9:03 mark, sparking a 10-0 Seawolf run.

The Seawolves led 45-31 at halftime and extended throughout the second stanza, with Thompson accounting for 16 of his 22 points after the break. The senior from Dimond High School pushed his UAA- and GNAC-record total to 302 three-pointers, shooting 6 of 13 from long range. Now with 1,662 points, Thompson sits just four points shy of No. 2 on UAA's career scoring list (1,666, Hansi Gnad, 1938-87).

Meanwhile, Fain scored 16 points and dished a career-best eight assists, along with a game-high nine rebounds. McGill shots 8 of 14 from the floor and committed just one turnover, and junior guard Dom Hunter came off the bench with 15 points on 4-of-5 three-point accuracy.

The Seawolves drained 19 of 42 three-pointers against SMU's zone defense, equaling the fifth-most makes and the establishing the fourth-most attempts in program history.

All four UAA seniors had efficient outings, with center Brad Mears accounting for seven points and five rebounds, and guard Boomer Blossom grabbing five rebounds. Freshman center Kalidou Diouf added eight points on 4-of-6 shooting and six rebounds.

The Seawolves will take the court against Thursday at 3:15 or 5:30 p.m. (Alaska time) in the GNAC Tournament quarterfinals, against either Central Washington or Western Washington. Check back at GoSeawolves.com later for the update.

NOTES: UAA has now finished among the top four in the GNAC standings for five straight seasons … Thompson earned his 80th victory in a Seawolf uniform to move alone in second place on the program's all-time list … Thompson scored double figures for the 20th consecutive game and Fain did it for the ninth time in a row … Hunter has scored double figures in 10 of his last 11 outings … Thompson has made at least one three-pointer in 42 consecutive games – also No. 2 on the Seawolves' all-time list.
