Top ranked Mavericks dispatch Seawolves

MANKATO, Minn. – Despite success on the man advantage from the freshman class, the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves fell to No.1-ranked Minnesota State in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game at the Verizon Wireless Center on Friday.

The Seawolves (7-14-4, 4-13-2 WCHA) were 2-for-6 on the power play, but were unable to stop the second best scoring offense in the nation as they continued to be winless outside of Alaska. UAA remains in the bottom of the WCHA with 10 points, while MSU (22-5-1, 18-2-1) retains the No. 1 spot in the league with 37 points.

UAA's penalty-killing unit received multi-point games from a pair of freshmen in forward Tad Kozun and defenseman Tanner Johnson, each with two helpers on the night. Kozun furnished his third career multi-point contest and has four assists in the last four games, while Johnson contributed with his first multi-point game in college.

Kozun and Johnson set up power-play goals for classmates Anthony Conti and Austin Azurdia. Picking up his second goal of the season and breaking a 19-game drought was Conti at 7:31 of the first period. Conti beat Fairbanks local Stephan Williams, five-hole to knot the game 1-1. The Mavericks' 1-0 lead came courtesy of Bryce Gervais at 3:03 of the period.

After three unanswered MSU tallies, Azurida furnished his third goal in four games, bringing the Seawolves within two at 13:44 of the final stanza. Azurdia was able to get by Williams with a backhander over his shoulder. Azurida is now 3-1—4 in the last four matches.

The Mavericks added one last tally at 16:46 on the power play for the 5-2 final.

Freshman netminder Olivier Mantha made 24 saves, while Williams was credited with 23. MSU outshot UAA, 29-25, while the Seawolves registered an 11-9 lead for shots on goal in the third period.

The Seawolves' struggles continued on the road, as they are now in three-game losing funk going into Saturday's contest at 4:07 p.m. AST.
