Zanders blasts #14 UAA over Fresno Pacific, 3-0

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Senior Katelynn Zanders smashed 17 kills Thursday as the nationally 14th-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team had little trouble remaining unbeaten with a 25-12, 25-16, 25-21 victory over Fresno Pacific in the GNAC/Pac West Crossover at Nicholson Pavilion.

The Seawolves (5-0) also got seven kills and seven digs from freshman outside hitter Leah Swiss, plus six kills on .500 hitting from junior middle blocker Erin Braun, helping UAA post a season-best .402 team hitting percentage.

In the first-ever meeting between the programs, the Sunbirds (0-2) were led by nine kills on .571 hitting from Montana Lowe, plus a match-high 12 digs from libero Hannah Butler.

UAA opened the match by winning seven of the first eight rallies and trailed only briefly at the beginning of the second set.

Zanders – who entered with a GNAC-best 4.29 kills per set – was nearly unstoppable as she registered a .517 hitting percentage, committing only two errors on 29 swings. Her 17 kills are the most for a GNAC player in a 3-set match this year and the most for a Seawolf in a 3-setter since Zanders ended the 2013 season with 21 against Seattle Pacific.

Junior setter Morgan Hooe had 29 assists and freshman libero Kyla Militante-Amper made a team-high nine digs, while senior middle blocker Caitlin Hanson posted five kills and three total blocks.

The Seawolves won despite getting only four kills (no errors) from reigning Great Northwest Athletic Conference offensive player-of-the-week Julia Mackey, who also contributed seven digs and a pair of block assists.

Reserves Kristi Farley and Alex Garrett made impacts in the third set as well, with Farley registering eight assists and Garrett picking up the first two kills of her career.

UAA plays a pair of nationally ranked teams Friday at the Crossover when it faces No. 20 Point Loma at 8 a.m. ADT and No. 21 BYU-Hawaii at 5 p.m. ADT. Both matches can be viewed live at portal.stretchinternet.com/uaa.
