Seniors power UAA past WOU in league opener

MONMOUTH, Ore. (Sept. 17) – The nationally 12th-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team got huge performances from the senior duo of Katelynn Zanders and Julia Mackey on Thursday night to power a 25-17, 22-25, 25-16, 25-18 victory over Western Oregon at the New P.E. Building.

In the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both clubs, Zanders delivered 22 kills and 17 digs, Mackey came through with 17 kills and 15 digs, and junior setter Morgan Hooe matched her career-high with 55 assists to help the Seawolves improve to 9-0 overall.

The Wolves (3-7, 0-1) were led by 14 kills and 12 digs from outside hitter Alisha Bettinson as the hosts were out-hit .280 to .183 and outdug 63-54.

After suffering through a rough second set, the Seawolves found themselves facing one of their biggest tests of the young season when the Wolves opened with a 6-2 advantage in the third. A pair of kills by freshman outside hitter Leah Swiss got UAA on track again, however, and junior middle blocker Erin Braun notched a kill to snap a 9-9 tie and begin a 9-1 Seawolf spurt.

The Seawolves took control from the outset in the fourth, jumping to leads of 4-1 and 12-6.

Swiss finished with 12 kills and seven digs, while Braun had four kills.

In addition to her team-high fourth double-double of the season, Zanders served three aces and registered an impressive .425 attack percentage. Mackey (.344) and Swiss (.360) also hit better than .300 individually, although the Seawolves could not extend their streak of six straight matches hitting over .300 as a team.

With Thursday's victory, the Seawolves are now just one win shy of tying the best start in program history, achieved in 1988. To accomplish that, UAA will have to beat the only other unbeaten team in the league when they face GNAC newcomer Concordia (9-0, 1-0) on Saturday night in Portland. That match begins at 6 p.m. and can be seen live at portal.stretchinternet.com/uaa.
