#11 UAA extends streaks with 3-1 win at UAF

FAIRBANKS – Playing her final collegiate match in her hometown, senior right-side hitter Julia Mackey slammed 13 kills to help the No. 11-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team rally for a 24-26, 25-11, 25-12, 25-15 victory over Alaska Fairbanks at the Patty Center on Tuesday night.

With the victory, the Seawolves (11-0, 3-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) now own the best start in the program's 36-year history, along with a 10-match win streak against their in-state rivals.

Senior outside Katelynn Zanders recorded a match-best 16 kills on .273 hitting for the Seawolves, along with a career-high-tying five aces and just one service error. Mackey was a force from the other side, too, hitting .478, along with six digs, two assists and an ace.

The Nanooks (0-10, 0-3) were led by 15 kills and six digs from senior outside hitter Sam Harthun, but the hosts dropped their 10th straight overall and seventh straight at home to UAA.

Coming off a season-low .126 hitting percentage in Saturday's road sweep of Concordia (Ore.), the Seawolves registered a season-best .410 percentage – UAA's fifth-highest in a GNAC match – against UAF. As a trio, setter Morgan Hooe, outside hitter Leah Swiss and middle blocker Caitlin Hanson combined for 14 kills on errorless hitting for a lofty .636 percentage.

Hooe added 33 assists, and freshman libero Kyla Militante-Amper made a match-high 15 digs.

The Seawolves held the Nanooks to .093 hitting and registered thorough advantages of 9-1 in blocks and 35-25 in digs, despite surrendering leads of 22-17 and 24-22 in the first set.

The 11 straight victories now surpasses the 1988 team for the best start in program history, and is just two shy of the best streak overall – 13 in a row by the Seawolves' 2009 GNAC title club.

Up next, the Seawolves return home to the Alaska Airlines Center for the first time in 19 days when they host Montana State Billings on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. ADT. Surf to GoSeawolves.com or call 907-786-1562 to for ticket purchasing and information.
