'Wolves earn WCHA split with 3-1 road win

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. – The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves retaliated from last night and forced a Western Collegiate Hockey Association split with a 3-1 win over host Lake Superior State Lakers Sunday evening at the Taffy Abel Arena in front of 1,539 fans.

The Seawolves (9-10-3, 6-8-2 WCHA) allowed an early Laker (9-13-4, 6-6-4 WCHA) strike before coming back with goals of their own in each frame. The victory ended a season-high, five-game winless streak and put UAA back in a two-way tie for eighth in the league with Alaska Fairbanks, each with 14 points. The 14 points tops UAA's 12 points from last season and is the program's 500th all-time win.

The Sunday matinee for Alaska fans started with LSSU's Owen Headrick scoring at 2:14 of the first period. The Seawolves would match Headricks strike at 14:18, when junior forward Connor Wright collected his third goal in five games. Sophomore Austin Azurdia and junior Chase Van Allen were credited with helpers.

The teams headed to the first intermission deadlocked 1-1, a score that held up until 2:05 in the second when sophomore forward Anthony Conti furnished his fifth goal of the season. The game-winning goal was assisted by freshmen Sean MacTavish and Jeremiah Luedtke – one of UAA's goal scorers from yesterday night.

Picking up UAA's final tally of the evening was Azurdia with 1:56 left in the game. The goal snapped a 17-game drought for Azurdia, as he know has four points in the last seven games. Additionally, senior forward Blake Tatchell was credited with the assist – his team-leading 13th of the season and 97th career point.

Getting the start in the net was sophomore Olivier Mantha, who made 34 saves in the win to improve to 8-9-3 on the season. Meanwhile, netminder Nick Kossoff, turned aside 19 shots in the loss. LSSU won the shot battle, 35-22.

The Seawolves will remain on the road until they face Bowling Green in a Thursday-Friday series, Jan. 21-22.
